ISSUES WITH BUYING PRODUCTS AND SERVICES ONLINE

One of the problems with buying online is providing banking details and identity theft. However, many people would suggest that it is safer that buying over the telephone or even in a shop.

Advantages of buying online:

  • Online payments involve encrypting individual’s details which mean that no one can view them other than banks and the person carrying the transaction.
  • Buying in the shop is more risky as your debit or credit card can be duplicated by a person working in the shop. There is the same risk when paying over the telephone.

In order to make safe payments online you should ensure that:

  • The web-browser is set to the highest level of security notification
  • That you know the company you are buying from. Check the phone number and address of the business.
  • The online shop is a secure site
  • Never give details if you are not convinced it is safe
  • Check that the seller has a valid encryption certificate
  • Print out copies of your payment
  • Check your bank statement at the end of the month

You should be aware of your distance selling rights and that the retailer complies with the following legislation:

  • Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000 – for all goods and services
  • Financial Services (Distance Marketing) Regulations 2004 – for financial services
